a quick note
Juneteenth- the celebration of African-American freedom, new beginnings, America, & the pursuit of a life that our ancestors dreamed of & died for.
Juneteenth is such an important part of history…& as a bi-racial mother with bi-racial children, its such an important part of OUR family’s history.
After all that was sacrificed in order for me & mine to have what we have…the very least I can do is make sure by babies know their roots.
I will link below everything, including the low prep Juneteenth Flag activity from the Seattle Times, I used to start the conversation with my 7, 5, & 4 year old!
I hope you’ll try it!
I love ya’ll,
Kai
THE activities
- We started out by watching a 3 minute YouTube video; it was definitely intended for a younger audience but it was still a lot to take in for my 3. It did spark some good questions though & was a great jumping point.
- Next, we colored these fact sheets from “Kids Activities.com”; these were GREAT to summarize the high points from the video (& it kept the youngest involved).
- To wrap up, we made a paper “Juneteenth Flag”; the Seattle Times published a great post summarizing the meaning of the flag & all the symbolism within it. Ya’ll know I LOVE a low prep activity; an EDUCATIONAL, low prep activity just takes the cake!
