In another life, I might have studied interior design. I’m a layperson on ALL accounts but I still love the way colors make you feel something; I love how a seemingly subtle tweak of color, furniture, decor, layout, etc. can change the whoooole dynamic & I LIVE for that moment when you get the room exactly right.
I do believe there is power in design but it’s not everything & it’s certainly NOT what makes a house a home.
Please don’t get me wrong, I loooove a good Amber Interiors rug (TAKE MY MONEY!) but…
In all my years, living in various kinds of homes & having friends from every side of the proverbial “track”, I KNOW that what makes a house a home cannot be found on Amazon nor can it be purchased at all. & I know it has nothing to do with the kind of home either; a trailer, an apartment, low income housing, big house or small, old or new…it doesn’t matter.
If it’s not a perfectly curated space or a magazine worthy exterior, WHY is it that in some homes, yours or not, you feel like you could just plop right down on the couch & feel at home?
The commonality is the undercurrent of unconditional love, of “come as you are”, of “YOU are welcome HERE.”.
Undercurrent: “an underlying feeling or influence, especially one that is contrary to the prevailing atmosphere and is not expressed openly.”
Read that again…..”CONTRARY to the prevailing atmosphere.”. A double-wide, low income housing, decor from the 1970’s (I might actually be in to that ;P)…it doesn’t actually matter.
Buy the trendy stuff if you want it but, remember when you scroll your feed today, it’s not what matters most.
Home is a feeling not a place.
Design 101 (from a layperson ;P)…. does love live there?
