At 8 pm the night before my daughters 2nd birthday, I ordered a cake, cupcakes, & ice cream from a local grocery store & had it delivered by instacart.
That same night, I bought 10 dollars worth of cheap birthday decorations & nasty Hostess donuts from Dollar General juuust before they closed.
I set it all out, taped a bunch of stuff to the wall, took a step back to look at it all &…crumbled.
I thought for sure I had ruined my daughters birthday. For some reason, at that moment, it was perfectly logical to me that my TWO year old daughter was going to wake up & be disappointed with the haphazard, thrown together birthday celebration.
I thought that she would somehow equate the quality of the decor with how much I love her.
& to boot, by the morning, all the decor had fallen off the wall…#fail. With no time to hang it back up, we spread it out on the floor.
The kids woke up &, to my surprise, they were THRILLED… they literally gasped & shrieked with JOY!
So, here’s a VERY IMPORTANT reminder to all the mommas out there (myself included):
Your kids don’t give a rats a** if the cake was homemade or store bought; a donut is a donut & a balloon arch that fell to the ground is just as cool even if it’s now a “balloon snake” instead.
The things that matter most to them are that you SHOW UP & love them the best that you can. & BTW, it’s okay if your very best some days are Hostess donuts & “balloon snakes”. My guess is…it’s not that stuff that dazzles them anyway…..it’s YOU.
